Adult Classes

Saturday morning classes are in person.

Thursday evening classes are online with Zoom.

Class A1-1, Beginner 1

This class is for students with no previous knowledge of German and introduces the adult student to the language and culture of the German-speaking world. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of basic communication skills in cultural context. The students will be able to introduce themselves and others, ask and answer simple questions, and participate in simple conversation in a variety of everyday situations. At the end of the A1-1 level the student will be able to formulate basic sentences (statements, questions with question words and yes/no questions), use articles, possessive pronouns and understands the accusative. The skills taught include reading, writing, listening and speaking German.

Class A1-2, Beginner 2

This course will continue the instruction begun in the Adult A1-1 course. Students entering this class should feel comfortable with the material learned in the Adult A1-1 class and / or should be able to understand and communicate in German at a very basic level. The student continues to improve his/her communication skill and uses them in additional settings related to travel, business and health. The students can interact in a simple way with native speakers, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly. To support the improved communication the students learn prepositions, the spoken past (Present Perfect Tense), and all modal verbs in the present tense.

Class A2-1, Intermediate 1

The intermediate class is designed for students who have attended both adult beginner classes, or are otherwise at a level comparable to those who did, as this course builds on the skills taught in the beginner classes. This course continues to build vocabulary and grammatical concepts, while also working on conversation skills. The class is taught, in large parts, in German. By the end of this course, students will know more advanced grammatical concepts like comparative and superlative, modal verbs in the written past or Präteritum tense, dependent clauses with weil, and wenn and passive tense. The vocabulary is continually enlarged and includes now leisure time activities, computer and online, expressing emotions, work environment, living spaces and traffic. The student can communicate in simple sentences on familiar and routine topics for the duration of a short conversation. Students will begin to understand the main concepts in news articles and other comparably complex texts.

Class A2-2, Intermediate 2

The intermediate class is designed for students who have attended the previous classes, or are otherwise at a level comparable to those who did. This course continues to build vocabulary and grammatical concepts, while also working on conversation skills. The class is taught mainly in German. By the end of this course, students will know more advanced grammatical concepts like adjective endings, reflexive pronouns, relative clauses, verbs with prepositions. The vocabulary is continually enlarged and includes now people and traffic, activities in our free time, living together, memories, vacationing, and culture. The conversations are getting longer and somewhat more complex. The student is able to deal with most situations likely to arise while traveling in areas where German is spoken.

Class B1 Intermediate 3

“Alles auf Deutsch” is the class motto. The instructive and entertaining lessons include conversation exercises, grammar reviews, writing exercises, and listening to native-speed German recordings. At the end of the B1 level, the students will understand the main ideas of complex text on concrete topics from newspapers and articles. During interactions with a native speaker he/she can interact with a comfortable degree of fluency and spontaneity. The student is able to produce text on a wide range of topics. New grammar is included like relative clauses with prepositions, genitive, n-declinations much of the grammar learned in the previous classes is reviewed and exceptions to the rules are added.

Students are in this class for at least two years. In one year one part of the book is taught in the other year the other part. It does not matter with which part you start in this class. The grammar is always briefly reviewed from the very basic and then added upon. The needed vocabulary is provided on two pages of the chapter.

Class B2 Advanced 1

This class is in German only. Students at the end of this level can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics. They are able to speak to a native speaker without strain for either party. Texts produced will be clear and detailed. Viewpoints can be expressed giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. The grammar is expanded into areas needed to read and understand newspaper articles and literature texts. Basic grammar is often reviewed and built upon. Topics are amongst others passive with modal verbs and relative clauses in all four cases.

Students are in this class for at least two years. In one year one part of the book is taught in the second year the other part is taught. It does not matter with which part you start in this class. The grammar is always briefly reviewed from the very basic and then added upon. The needed vocabulary is acquired during the lessons.

Class C1 Advanced 2

The C1 course is designed for students with advanced oral and written German language skills. Students will now read and understand a broad variety of native German texts, listening to German radio and TV, discussing and structuring complex issues, and expressing themselves fluently and spontaneously in discussions and presentations. Students will also gain insight into the life and culture of German-speaking countries through current media reports, literature excerpts and videos. Grammar is discussed on an as needed basis. This class is great for students who lived for a longer time in Germany and would like to maintain their advanced level of speaking.

The class will decide with the teacher together if a textbook is desired or if current media, literature and videos are used as the basis for conversation. Some of our advanced students are coming for years to this class, as it is always up-to-date and fresh. Students contribute with their wishes to a highly-varied selection of topics.
